In June of 2007, WHAT cut the ribbon on its new state-of-the-art performance space, the Julie Harris Stage. The 200+ seat facility joined WHAT’s 90-seat Harbor Stage and WHAT for Kids tent to provide Wellfleet with three performance options for most nights of the summer season.

Julie Harris Stage
Named for the multiple Tony-winning actress and WHAT Honorary Chairperson, Julie Harris, the theater boasts the latest technical advances in theater design. Designed by John Freeman of Platt Anderson Freeman Architects, the theater has quickly become the premiere performing arts facility on Cape Cod. According to The Boston Globe, “It's a superb venue for the kind of intimate theater that WHAT produces.” (A gem in an unlikely stage setting link by Robert Campbell, 12/23/07)
WHAT Harbor Stage
WHAT has been producing theater in its Wellfleet Harbor venue since 1985 when the company moved into the paint can and kitchen appliance-strewn rooms next to Uncle Frank’s restaurant. This charming and rustic theater with the W.H.A.T. billboard on its roof has since turned into a beloved Wellfleet landmark.
WHAT for Kids Tent
In 2004 WHAT branched out into children’s theater with its popular WHAT for Kids program. Founded by Stephen Russell, an actor and director with the company since 1987, WHAT for Kids has performed plays for thousands of kids of all ages beneath the company’s big-top tent.
Special Events
Many of WHAT’s special programs are hosted by other facilities located on the outer cape – The Congregational Church of Wellfleet, Provincetown Town Hall, and the United Universalist Church in Provincetown. Check each event listing to see which venue is hosting the special event you are interested in attending.
