Interning at WHAT

We offer both production and management internships. As a production intern, during the day you may be in the shop or in rehearsal as an assistant stage manager. At night you are likely to be involved in the running of whatever show is up at the time. Other activities include hanging and focusing lights, tending costumes and props and don't forget cleaning.

Management interns work mainly in the administrative offices and work with the Artistic, Marketing and Development Directors on a variety of tasks.

We also offer an educational component to our internship: At several points during the course of the summer you will participate in seminars hosted by visiting professionals (directors, designers, actors.) These are quite informal, tailored to the participating interns' wants and needs.

Housing is one of our scarcist resources so we encourage interns who can provide their own local housing to apply. If you are one of the few chosen who need housing you will most likely share a room in one of our two residences. They both have a full kitchen, laundry facilities and shared bathroom. The beach is a short drive or bikeride away!

As for acting, sometimes interns end up onstage but not usually. You're welcome to come audition at our open call in April. If the reason for your internship is mainly to get onstage then this probably isn't for you.

Eligibility: Interns should be at least 18 years old, a current undergraduate or have equivalent experience, able to commit to a 3 month summer program (limited off season internships also available), and reside in or able to relocate to Wellfleet.

Experience: Interns can expect to work within their areas of interest: design, construction, development and/or marketing.

Housing & Compensation: WHAT has facilities to house a few full-time off-Cape interns with the resident company. Note: You may share a room with one other person. WHAT interns get paid a weekly stipend of $150. Academic credit may also be arranged through your college.

Seminars: WHAT offers an additional educational component to our internship program. At several points during the course of the summer, interns participate in seminars hosted by our dramaturg and/or visiting professionals, such as directors, designers and actors.

Duration: Most internships begin in late May and extend through August. A limited number of internships are available during the rest of the year.

Travel Travel expense to and from WHAT is the responsibility of the intern.
